In a week-long intensive seminar, Dr. Michael L. Best will introduce participants to the practice of Human Centered-Digital Design (HCD). Collaborating with users within the Lahore area, participants will develop mobile phone application prototypes responsive to the community’s identified needs and opportunities. Particular attention will be paid to communities generally ignored or under-served by existing mobile phone apps, such as the print illiterate, and on particular services that are targeting their social, economic or political development objectives. The workshop will be structured around the IDEO HCD Toolkit’s process of Hearing, Creating, and Delivering. In addition, through a series of case-study readings and research presentations, the workshop will familiarize participants with the current state of information and communication technologies and development (ICTD) research and practice.
Dr. Best is associate professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology where he directs the Technologies and International Development Lab. He is also a faculty associate of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT and has served as director of Media Lab Asia in India and head of the eDevelopment group at the MIT Media Lab.
The workshop will employ an interdisciplinary team project approach. Participants with backgrounds in the computing and social sciences as well as design are all encouraged to apply!
