Dr. Adnan Noor Mian, the Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair for ICTD and Vice Chancellor of the Information Technology University (ITU), is a distinguished scholar and researcher in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). He holds a PhD in Computer Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, and has completed two post-doctoral fellowships as a visiting researcher at the same university. Additionally, he has held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
In 2020, Dr. Adnan was selected as a Senior Associate at the International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, marking a significant milestone as the first associate in the field of Internet of Things (IoT). His work at ICTP, particularly in collaboration with Dr. Marco Zennaro, focuses on advancing ICTD projects to improve ICT accessibility in developing countries. His efforts include research on Long Distance Wireless Links, Wireless Sensor Networks for Development, and affordable solutions for wireless connectivity. His innovative research also explores emerging technologies such as IoT and Machine Learning (ML), particularly their applications in ICTD. He organized Pakistan’s first TinyML workshop at ITU, in collaboration with ICTP.
Dr. Adnan’s expertise extends to areas such as wireless sensor networks, mobile and distributed systems, cloud computing, blockchain, and network and cybersecurity. He is actively engaged in research on intrusion detection systems, network monitoring, penetration testing, and the application of ML in these fields. As Co-Principal Investigator of ITU’s Blockchain Security Lab, Dr. Adnan played a pivotal role in securing a PKR 80 million grant to advance blockchain and security research.
Dr. Adnan has also been widely recognized for his contributions to education and research. In 2016, he received the Frogh-e-Taleem Award from the Government of Punjab for his contributions to education. In 2017, he was honored by the Chief Minister of Punjab for his role as the founding chairperson of ITU’s Department of Computer Science. His leadership continues to bridge academia with industry, working closely with organizations such as the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) and Punjab Safe Cities Authorities (PSCA) to engage students in solving real-world ICT challenges.
