Umar Shehzad has an electronics engineering degree and a master’s degree in computer science. Umar developed an interest in education through his experience of managing Makeistan, Pakistan’s first academic makerspace. Based out of Lahore’s Information Technology University (ITU), Umar has been working with Makeistan for three years. Students, as well as ’non-traditional’ learners from outside of the university, are allowed to use the space and tools with freedom, towards the fulfillment of their own learning objectives. Having an engineering and computer science background, Umar leads technology related workshops and facilitate design workshops for a diverse audience, at the space and outside of it. Umar has also co-taught a course called D-Lab to electrical engineering students at ITU.

This 5-week course in acting is designed for anyone who wants to learn acting. The participants will learn movement, voice, speech/ articulation visualization and sensory exercises and emotional memory under physical and mental preparation of an actor on building a character. What makes this course unique is that the participants will learn the skills of acting through the process of acting. They will not only learn fundamentals of acting but also apply that knowledge in practice through a play which will be produced during the course and will be performed in front of an audience at the end of the course. So the participants from day two of the course will be handed over a script to understand the preparation and process of an actor. Writers understand the importance of building believable and significant fictional worlds using details and cues that can be learned through practice. This 6-week course looks at the importance of world-building by taking into account cinematic and literary science fictional worlds. At the end of the course, students should be able to produce an original written work.

This short course is open for ages 16 – 24.

Areej Mehdi treads a fine line between science fiction and science fact on a daily basis. As an adjunct faculty at Information Technology University, she teaches Pakistan’s first undergraduate course on Science Fiction in the Contemporary World. As Program Manager MIT Enterprise Forum Pakistan she runs a virtual incubation program for startups working in the science and technology space. Both roles encourage her to reflect on the impact of technology and our relationship to it.
